New Years Resolutions for School Counselors: set goals that help you be your best you!

Are you a New Years resolution setter? When it comes to work, I think it’s important to set SMART goals or resolutions we can stick to and measure. I’m not talking about program goals, but those are important too! I’m talking about resolutions that bring about positive changes to create work-life balance and cut out the crazy improve sanity and focus at school. Counselors tend to give and give and then give some more until there isn’t much left for ourselves (just me? I doubt it). We all know that we can’t pour from an empty cup, so it’s time to set goals that help us replenish ourselves so we have the energy and mental capacity to do so! On that note, I’ve created a list of New Years resolutions for school counselors. Feel free to add to the list in the comments section!

New Years Resolutions for School Counselors

  1. Eat lunch before 3pm at least twice during the week
  2. Sit down at least twice during the day
  3. Use the bathroom within 1 hour of needing to go
  4. Drink your coffee while it is still hot at least once during the week
  5. Successfully help another adult understand that behavior does not change as a result of one intervention one time
  6. Officially ditch the “Guidance Counselor” title and kindly help others know why
  7. Reveal the secret that you do not, in fact, have a magic wand
  8. Learn at least 5 new “slang” terms from the students (note to self: no one has made “fetch” happen yet)
  9. Cut yourself some slack – no one can do all the things
  10. Practice small acts of self care every.single.day.

As I’m sure you guessed, a few of these are tongue-in-cheek, but let’s get real: it’s time to cut ourselves some slack and treat ourselves like human beings. Give yourself the time you need to refuel your body. Grant yourself a moment to refresh and refocus you mind. Allow yourself to take a break when you need to. Say, “No,” when there are too many things on your plate. You deserve it, and your students deserve you at your best!

What else would you add to this list? I’d love to know what sanity-saving New Years resolutions you’re setting for yourself this year. Let me know in the comments section! Until then, I’m wishing you a happy, healthy, productive new year that is full of self care and self compassion!
