Watercolor Affirmations Activity for Group Counseling

watercolor affirmations art activity for school counseling classroom guidance lessons or small group counseling

Last week, I shared a post about making scratch art affirmations in small group counseling activities. These can be so powerful for students as they realize their strengths and positive qualities and see them shine through the dark paint on the paper. This week I wanted to share a similar activity using watercolor paints and a white crayon. If you’re short on time, this activity packs the same punch in less time!

What you’ll need:

  • Cardstock paper
  • White crayons
  • Watercolor paints
  • Paintbrushes

How to do it:

  1. Students will write positive affirmations or positive traits they possess on white card stock paper.
  2. Students will then simply paint over the words with watercolor paints. The paint will not appear on the paper where the crayon is, so the positive words will shine through the paint!

When to use this activity:

  • With individuals who are working on building positive self talk
  • During small group counseling with self esteem groups
  • As a closing activity with small groups to reflect on their strengths
  • ┬áIn classroom guidance lessons focusing on recognizing strengths

My favorite way to use it:

I used this as a closing activity with a 7-8th grade self esteem small group. I gave the students time to reflect on their growth during the group and asked them to think about a trait they possessed that is really important to them that they discovered during group or that they became comfortable sharing during group. They wrote these traits in white crayon on their paper and then used watercolor to show how beautiful these traits are when we share who we really are with others! We used 5×7 cardstock papers and I gave the girls in the group 5×7 picture frames to keep their affirmations in when group was over. This activity was a big hit!
